Your lovely fiance/husband/life partner has done an excellent job of picking out an exquisite diamond and designing a beautiful engagement ring for that you absolutely cherish. Now it’s over to you to make sure that it stays sparkly and gorgeous every day as if it had just come out of the box. Here are some do’s and don’ts of diamond care to guide you.
Do clean your diamonds and jewellery at home
The easiest way to cut through grease from moisturising creams and hair sprays that can get onto your diamonds is to use ammonia.
In a small dish, make a solution of 1 part ammonia – Long Life Floor Cleaner is recommended by our jeweller – and 4 parts warm water. Soak your jewellery in the solution for around 20 minutes. After that, gently give the jewellery a clean using a soft bristled toothbrush.
Make another solution using one part dish washing detergent to two parts warm water and soak the jewellery for another 10 or 15 minutes.
Gently scrub the ring once again with the toothbrush. Rinse with warm water and blow dry with a hair dryer.
Don’t wear it to the gym
Besides causing discomfort while lifting weights, wearing your engagement ring at the gym can cause unnecessary wear and tear. The metal of barbells or dumbbells will grate against your ring and may cause damage to the band. If your ring is set with small diamonds, the direct contact with gym equipment can also cause the diamonds to come loose over time.
Do avoid touching your diamond
Diamonds attract grease and can become very dirty easily, especially if they are constantly coming into contact with skin. Fingerprints left on your diamond will cause it to look dull and lose the sparkle. Just as you were taught as a teenager not to touch your face constantly to avoid contamination and skin breakouts, it’s best to avoid playing with your diamond ring to maximise its sparkle.
Don’t take your ring off in public
Taking your ring off while you’re out in public is an easy way to lose your precious jewellery. It may be tempting to take your engagement ring off and set it aside when washing your hands in a public restroom, but chances are you’re going to walk out of there without it. Also make sure to always leave it in the same place at home if you take it off before doing chores or going to bed. That way you’ll always know where to find it.
Do have your ring maintained by a jeweller once a year
You may be doing a wonderful job of cleaning your engagement ring at home, but it’s wise to have it checked out by a professional every now and then to ensure that your diamonds are still securely set in place. You are welcome to bring your engagement ring back to us and we will have our master jeweller service it for you.
